Junior
Organiser – Miss Emma Duggleby 01653 693882
First things first – Get a Handicap!
We now have a junior membership some 150 strong, which is great – however less than 50% of you have a handicap. This is something we have been working on this year and we have a much larger number with handicaps - we just need now to work on the rest of you!
Obtaining a handicap is simple – we need 3 scorecards from you played over any of the loops of 9 holes. Indicate which tee you have played from (yellow if you are big enough, red if you are not). If you do not have anybody to mark a card for you, talk to Emma in the Pro Shop and she will organise this for you. Based on your scores you will be allocated a handicap of up to 54 to help get you on your way.
Competitions
Junior Competitions are organised for the school holidays,
Saturdays and Sundays. These are open to all under 18s
(both girls and boys) with a club handicap of 54 or
less. For these, sheets are displayed for entries on
the juniors’ notice board in the pool room. Just
put your name down on the competition list and then
there will be a draw made (for the cup competitions)
or turn up at the specified time (for the fun competitions).
We have played several different formats of competition
this year including stablefords, texas scrambles etc
and they have proved very popular. Don’t be afraid
to join in and meet other junior members. If you have
any questions at any time, don’t hesitate to ask
Emma.
Once your handicap reaches 28 or less you may also play in the men’s competitions and medals. Please note that your card in a men’s competition must be marked by an adult member.
Annually, the Juniors have Home and Away Matches against Ampleforth College, a match against Kirkbymoorside and hold a Reciprocal outing at Bridlington in the summer.
Coaching
Junior coaching sessions are held during the Spring/Summer.
All Juniors whose home club is Malton and Norton Golf
Club will be written to early in the new year with details
of the coaching programme.
Individual coaching sessions are always available with Steve Robinson and those who have lessons with him soon find their handicaps tumbling and technique improving. Steve is one of Golf Monthly’s Top 25 Coaches and is experienced in coaching everyone from Tour Players to complete beginners. Ask in the shop for more details.
The Bob Burns Bursary Fund
(in memory of Bob Burns 1926-2006 –
Malton Member for 39 years, Captain in 1985 and York
Union President in 1993)
The Junior Section is the grateful recipient of a bequest
from Bob Burns’ estate which has been set up as
a trust to provide individual coaching for selected
juniors who have earned it, worked hard and shown most
promise. This is judged on attitude rather than ability
and it has been agreed this will only be awarded for
deserving youngsters and not awarded for the sake of
it. Bob felt strongly about continuing the tradition
of excellence and wished to assist others in becoming
the next Simon Dyson or Emma Duggleby.
The Bob Burns Bursary is being awarded for the first
time in 2006. There are two recipients instead of one
this time as both have worked so hard and an amount
each will be allocated for individual tuition with Steve
– Congratulations Adele Butler and Josh Wilford.
